The Faculty of Management Sciences was founded in accordance with the 7th phase of the Education Development Plan (1992 – 1996) to satisfy the demand for manpower with professional knowledge in business and economics. It aims to provide new educational opportunities for the population of Northeastern Thailand. The Faculty takes on the responsibility of education, research, academic services and related activities to the community at large.
The Faculty of Management Sciences sprouted from the Department of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in the 1992 academic year, following the Royal Gazette book number 109, section 126, page 1 on 30th December 1992 The Faculty takes that date as the date of its establishment. The first curriculum under the responsibility of the Faculty of Management Sciences was the Bachelor of Business in Finance.
According to the Royal Gazette book number 109, section 126, page 1 on 30th December 1992, three original departments in the Faculty of Management upon its foundation were the Department of Finance and Accounting, Department of Business Administration, and the Department of Economics.
In the academic year of 1994, the Department of Business Administration opened the Certificate Program in Hotel Management and Tourism. The curriculum was co-taught by full time faculty members along with guest lecturers who were professionals in the field.
In the academic year of 2000 the Department of Business Administration began offering a Certificate Program in Marketing, with a teaching philosophy that aims to combine theory and practice. The aim is to produce knowledgeable graduates with sound morals and ethics who can apply their knowledge to the benefit of their workplaces and personal lives, which will contribute to the betterment of the local community and the nation at large.
The Department of Economics was founded under the Faculty of Management Sciences according to the 7th phase of the Education Development Plan (1992 – 1996) to develop manpower knowledgeable in economics, and to expand academic opportunities.
In 1993, the Department of Economics began developing the Bachelor of Economics curriculum following the Khon Kaen University order number 907/2536 dated 7th April 1993. The curriculum was approved by the University Council and the Ministry of University Affairs (now the Office of the Higher Education Commission) on 5th April 1995. The first class of 29 students was admitted to the curriculum in the 1994 academic year. The first graduating class of 29 students completed the program in 1997.
Subsequently, the Department of Economics formed a committee to draft the Graduate Curriculum in Business Economics (Special Section). Following the Khon Kaen University order number 53/2542 dated 11th January 1999. The curriculum was approved by the University Council and the Ministry of University Affairs (now the Office of the Higher Education Commission) on 24th December 2544. In academic year 2001 the first class of 46 students was admitted.
The Department of Economics emphasizes development to meet international standards. Consequently, the 9th Phase of the Education Development Plan (2002 – 2006) formed a committee to develop the Graduate Program in Economics (English Section), following the Khon Kaen University order number 1182/2545 dated 24th April 2002.
In the academic year of 2543 the Department of Economics formed a committee to improve the Economics Graduate Curriculum following the Khon Kaen University order number 67/2543 dated 23th November 2000.
Today, the Faculty of Management Sciences offers several undergraduate and graduate programs. As the community and the country undergoes continuous changes, so too does the Faculty of Management Sciences. Both the policy and the delivery of instructions at the Faculty undergo continuous improvements and adaptations to satisfy educational needs. Current modifications emphasize the effectiveness of instructions and are consistent with the national policy of student-based learning. Specifically, several rigidities have been removed to allow more flexibility and efficiency that are fitting to the fast-changing educational context.

Like Khon Kaen University, the infrastructure of the Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy provides various tools necessary for learning, research, as well as organizational administration. Examples of these facilities include.
The Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy Library
As there are various specialized fields within the faculty, requiring students to gather knowledge from diverse sources, the Faculty sees the need for a library on location.
Funds are continually allocated for its maintenance and improvements to meet research needs of students and staff. The library currently holds various specialized textbooks, dissertations, and research publications, all in both printed and digital formats. It is opened daily.
The computer labs at the Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy serve various needs including instructions, workshops, and advising on IT issues to students. There are a total of 120 computers.
Software used in fields such as finance, accounting, economics, statistics, and hotel management are available, and students are free to use the lab anytime during its operating hours.
Hotel Management Laboratory
The lab is used to practice skills in hotel related services, which are a part of the Hotel Management and Tourism curriculum.
Available in the lab are hotel management software, front-desk software, and Point-of-Sale (POS) software. Students get to practice with these tools to gain familiarity before entering the profession after graduating.
Stock Exchange of Thailand Information Center (SET-IC)
This is a center for learning in investment. It provides access to news and data on financial markets and investment databases for investment at the Stock Exchange of Thailand. SET-IC is a collaborative project of Khon Kaen University and the Stock Exchange of Thailand, with the Faculty of Business Administration and Accountancy responsible for its operation.
In addition to data, the center also provides educational services such as workshops, seminars, and webinars to build investment knowledge and skills to those interested. The center is staffed with knowledgeable staff to help students, other staff, researchers, and other users on the spot.
In addition to the principal tasks of producing quality graduates, research, and educational services, the MS Faculty also encourages international relations which promote understanding and cooperation with educational institutions from various countries. This is to raise the educational standards within the faculty by exchanging knowledge on best practices, and to open new horizons and opportunities of students via different student exchange programs. Examples of international universities in cooperation with the MS Faculty are as follows.
Osaka Gakuin University, Japan.
Osaka Gakuin University and Khon Kaen University are in cooperation under the Memorandum of Agreement between the two universities in 3 areas. These are
- Exchange of students,
- Exchange of academic information and publication, and
- Other exchanges of an academic nature agreed upon by both parties.
Annually, at least 2 student exchange programs take place, including inbound and outbound exchanges, as well as short and long term exchanges ranging from 2 weeks to 1 academic year. The term of the Memorandum of Agreement was from 2011 – 2015.
Tohoku University, Japan
Tohoku University of Japan and Khon Kaen University are in cooperation under the Memorandum of Agreement between the two universities in 4 areas. These are
- Promotion of joint research and educational activities,
- Invitation of short-term visits of faculty members and researchers for lectures, conferences, colloquia, and symposia or other academic activities,
- Exchange of information and pertinent publication in the field of interest to both institutions,
- Exchange of faculty members, personnel, researchers, and students for study and research.
A student in an exchange program between the universities will study at the partner university for up to one year.
Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland
The Faculty of Management Sciences at Khon Kaen University and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland, signed an academic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). As a result, the two universities and the University of Udine, Italy, with support from the Stiftung Mercator Schweiz foundation, have agreed to jointly host 3 practical Summer School Workshops in 3 years starting in 2013. The Zurich University of Applied Sciences hosted the workshop in 2013, and Khon Kaen University hosted in 2014. The University of Udine, Italy, is to host in 2015. The term of the MOU is from 2013 – 2015.
The first workshop hosted by Zurich University of Applied Sciences titled “Summer School - Geography of Food” took place during 24th June 2013 – 7th July 2013 at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Wadenswil Campus, Switzerland. The main objectives were to provide knowledge and understanding in Food Sustainability, and to give students the opportunity to brainstorm, exchange ideas, and discuss different alternatives. Each university selected 10 students to participate in the program.
University of Colima, Mexico
The Faculty of Management Sciences at Khon Kaen University is in an academic cooperation agreement with the University of Colima in Mexico in the fields of Marketing and Hotel and Tourism Management at the graduate level. The cooperation is under the project titled The UMAP Joint Study Program in Hospitality Management and Joint Study Program in Marketing.
Under the agreement, there will be at least 2 student exchange programs between the universities each year, including both inbound and outbound as well as both short and long term exchanges ranging from 1 semester to 1 full academic year. When all requirements are met, students may receive diplomas from both universities.
Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy
The Faculty of Management Sciences at Khon Kaen University is in an academic cooperation agreement with the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy. Areas of cooperation cover student exchanges, instruction, and research. Under the agreement, there will be at least 2 student exchange programs between the universities each year, including both inbound and outbound as well as both short and long term exchanges ranging from 1 semester to 1 full academic year. The term of agreement is 2012 – 2015.
University of Greenwich, United Kingdom
The Faculty of Management Sciences at Khon Kaen University is in an academic cooperation agreement with the University of Greenwich, England, covering student exchange in the area of Marketing. The exchange program is in the 3+1 format with course transfers: 3 first years to be completed at Khon Kaen University, and the 4th year to be completed at the University of Greenwich. Students who meet all the requirements will receive a BA (Hons) Marketing diploma from both universities. The term of agreement is 2013 – 2015.
Far East University, South Korea
The Faculty of Management Sciences at the Khon Kaen University and the Far East University Eumsung, Chungbook, Republic of Korea, entered into an academic cooperation agreement in various areas. These include short and long term student exchanges, academic exchanges, and cultural exchanges. The term of the agreement is from 2013 to 2018. Four main goals of the agreement are as follows.
- To encourage, and use their best endeavors to effect, visit from one university to the other by the member of the academic staff for the purpose of participating in joint teaching, joint research, joint conference, joint faculty and academic program development, and joint cultural program.
- To develop student exchange programs and offer admissions to qualified students to enroll in undergraduate and graduate courses.
- To encourage the exchange of scientific materials, publication, and information.
- To prepare, as necessary, a working program detailing specific forms and content of cooperation.
University of Udine, Italy
The Faculty of Management Sciences at the Khon Kaen University and the University of Udine, Italy, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two universities along with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland. The three universities received support from the Stiftung Mercator Schweiz Foundation to jointly host a series of practical Summer School Workshops spanning three summers. Each of the universities is to alternate hosting a workshop each summer, starting with the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland, hosting the first workshop in 2013. Khon Kaen University will host the workshop in 2014, while the University of Udine will do so in 2015. Each university will choose 10 students to participate in each workshop. The MOU covers the period 2013 – 2015.
The Faculty of Management Sciences at Khon Kaen University has an annual schedule of operations following a strategic plan with clear objectives and consistent with the organizational mission. Annual operations are summarized and reported in order to be reviewed, evaluated, and to find areas of improvements following the PDCA principle (Plan, Do, Check, and Act).
